Jeff Hopkins at TedX in Victoria:

“Education is not the filling of a pail, but rather, the lighting of a flame.” – Jeff Hopkins (Pacific School of Innovation and Inquiry)

Learning is already inside us and it needs to be sparked. He speaks about difference between knowing about something and really knowing. Emergent learning – the opportunity to learn something new. We don’t often allow for deep inquiry in schools because it is difficult to assess in a standardized way.

Student have much more anxiety now and our learning is not serving our students in the world. Jeff’s solution – to move away from “subject silos” and more toward competencies. Re-organize learning into broad, high level competencies: critical thinking, creative thinking, ecological literacy, mathematical literacy. When put with learning objectives, it contextualizes the curriculum so that students have deeper learning.
